What is an RESP used for?
The RESP is designed to help you gradually save money to cover your children’s post-highschool education expenses.
Indeed, college and university tuition fees can be very expensive. By opening an RESP and starting to contribute while your child is in elementary or high school, you are helping to prepare for their future success.
The funds in an RESP can be used to pay for various types of post-secondary education (vocational programs, college diplomas, certifications, bachelor’s degrees, etc.). If your child does not pursue further studies, don’t worry. The funds can be withdrawn and redistributed through various strategies. Our partner advisors can discuss the available options with you.
The grants offered
When you open an RESP, the government also wants to contribute to your child’s success and offers several grants.
Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG)
The CESG offers you up to 20% in grants on your first $2,500 in contributions, which amounts to $500 per year.
Canada Learning Bond (CLB)
The CLB is offered to low-income families and consists of a $500 grant in the first year, followed by $100 for additional years.
Quebec Education Savings Incentive (QESI)
The QESI provides up to 10% in grants on the first $2,500 in contributions, which amounts to $250 per year.
Families who benefited from the RESP
I opened an RESP as soon as my first child was born. I contributed a little each year until they turned 18. When they started college, they had over $48,000 available, including my contributions, the grants, etc. They still thank me to this day for contributing!
Sylvie Huot
I had no idea how generous the government grants were for the RESP. I started contributing for my family, and I receive hundreds of dollars from the government every year. It adds up so quickly! I’m so happy to be able to offer this to my daughter for her future!
